Department Targets Chicago, other Markets in Upcoming Advertising Campaign

New Mexico is ready to woo the Windy City.

State tourism officials say winning over Chicago-dwelling travelers is among the objectives for FY 2014 now that the department has an extra $2 million to spend on advertising.

The Legislature approved the additional funding earlier this year, giving the department a total of about $5 million to market the state.

State Tourism Secretary Monique Jacobson said the bulk of the new money will go toward boosting advertising in key markets around the region – namely Denver, Phoenix, Dallas and Houston – and on specific winter-time messaging.

But the infusion will also allow the state to have a solid presence in Chicago.

Tourism Department Joins Governor, Public & Private Sector, in Launch of ‘New Mexico True’ Summer Reading Challenge

Governor Susana Martinez May 22 announced the launch of four summer reading challenges for New Mexico children. The programs are sponsored by a variety of statewide community partners and offer an array of exciting prizes for participating students and winners.

The summer reading challenges are designed to stop the “summer slide,” where students often lose a portion of their reading proficiency during the summer months and must catch up on their skills when they return to school in August.

In addition to smaller prizes being provided to all participating readers, grand prizes for winning students will include participating in a New Mexico True family vacation to places like Ruidoso, Red River and Socorro. Tourism Sec. Monique Jacobson joined in the announcement.

The Western Publishing Association has named New Mexico Magazine the Best Regional & State Consumer magazine in the association’s annual Maggie Awards competition. The announcement was made April 24 at the Maggie Awards dinner in Los Angeles.
